Minister of Agriculture Declares Brazil Free of Bird Flu

The Brazilian Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Favaro, notified the World Animal Health Organization (OMSA) that it has not identified any additional cases of bird flu in commercial flocks for 28 days since the first case was announced in the state of Rio Grande do Sul on May 16th. They have followed all sanitary procedures and therefore, Brazil can now be considered free of bird flu.

The Minister emphasized that the government conducted all required sanitary procedures with total transparency and efficiency needed to be declared free of bird fly. He has also notified directly all the countries that put restrictions on Brazil's poultry exports of this new development, and he expects a slow gradual return of Brazil's poultry exports. He emphasized Brazil's robust sanitary procedures insures a safe and healthy food supply and he expects a normalization of exports as quickly as possible.
