Rain Disrupts Wheat Planting in Southern Brazil

Author: Michael Cordonnier/Soybean & Corn Advisor, Inc.

Wheat planting in the state of Rio Grande do Sul advanced only 2% last week to 39% due to persistent heavy rains. Some areas of the state have received up to 12 inches of precipitation during June resulting in saturated soils and localized flooding.

Farmers are reporting poor germination and emergence, seedlings being washed out by erosion, compaction and the need for some replanting especially in low lying areas. According to Emater, the state is expected to plant 1,198,276 hectares of wheat in 2025 (2.95 million acres).

Rio Grande do Sul is the largest wheat producing state in Brazil responsible for approximately 48% of the 2025 Brazilian wheat acreage followed by Parana at 32%.
