Brazil - Farmers in Brazil had planted 6.7% of their first corn crop as of late last week compared to 7.7% last year according to AgRural. This represents an advancement of 3.5% for the week. Most of the planting thus far has been in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, but planting is also starting in the states of Parana and Santa Catarina.
Soybean planting can start today, September 1st, in parts of Parana if the farmer feels there is adequate soil moisture. In the state of Mato Grosso, farmers are allowed to start planting on September 7th. There is enough soil moisture in Parana to start planting, but the soil moisture in Mato Grosso is very short and only farmers with irrigation will probably start on September 7th.
The Brazilian National Institute of Meteorology (INMET) is forecasting rainfall during September in the center west region of Brazil, including Mato Grosso, at 50 mm (2 inches) below the historical average of 150 mm (6 inches) Temperatures during September are forecasted to be 0.6 to 1.5C above average. The combination of higher temperatures and low relative humidity can compromise germination and emergence of newly planted soybeans.
Argentina - Farmers in Santa Fe and Entre Rios have started planting corn and the planting pace will pick up during the first half of September. Corn in Argentina is planted in two phases. The early corn will be planted primarily in September and October. The late corn will be planted primarily in December and January. Farmers do not like to plant corn during the month of November because the corn would pollinate in January, which can potentially be the hottest and driest time of the summer.
Soybeans in Argentina will start to be planted about mid-October. Farmers in Argentina had planted 19.3% of their sunflowers as of late last week.
